I love working with Dichroic (pronounced Dye-Crow-Ick) glass. It is tricky to work with and very expensive glass. It was originally created for the Aerospace industry but is now available to glass artists!!

This glass has unique features because of the way it is made. A multi-layer coating is placed on glass by using a highly technical vacuum deposition process. Quartz crystal and metals oxides are vaporized with an electron beam gun in an airless vacuum chamber. The vapor then floats upward and attaches to the surface of the glass. OK – a little too technical?! Then just admire the results. The gold colored glass pictured here is a sample of just one color and texture available in dichroic glass. This is the gold dichroic glass I use to create the center piece of glass for my San Juan Sunset plates. In my mind it represents the reflection of the setting sun on the water surrounding San Juan Island where I live.
